Review The Vagina Monologues : Now This Is What You Call A “Master Piece”

What does one do when they get cozy in soft-Kashmiri blanket at 4.00 am? Well….most of us snore. Most of the day was passed lazing around, another important realization: Never ever have I had such intense hangover and that too with mixed-fruit juice. Sheeks! Who would have thought!

In the evening, along with some family ladies I was at Prithvi Theatre….to watch the hugely successful Obie-Award winning play, The Vagina Monologues (TVM), by Eve Ensler. The Indian adaptation is done by A Poor-Box productions and is directed by the ever-so charming Mahabanoo Mody-Kotwal.

Review Seeds and Flowers : The So-Called “American Dream”

Kicked off Saturday evening with watching “Seeds and Flowers” at Ranga Sharda (Bandra). The play is produced and en-acted by a theatre group from the US called Krea and is based on life-experiences of two Indian couples settled in US and working hard towards fulfilling the so-called “American Dream”.

Frankly speaking, I was a little apprehensive going along with friends who do not share the same fondness for theatre as I do and so was worried that they wouldn’t appreciate the effort of these young folks who had flown across seven seas to showcase their talent and that too for a good cause. But little did I know that they would end up liking it much more than me.

I guess for many like me, the first thing that comes to mind when we think about Theatre or Stage plays is a tiny little block in Juhu, very close to the beach and ever so filled with vibrant atmosphere – Yes, I am talking about Prithvi Theatre.

Prithvi holds many fond memories for me, starting from my college days. Since it is just a couple of blocks from home, I use to practically end up there every second day either enjoying some electrifying performances or simply making conversations with friends over a cup of coffee.

Celebrate with the Colours of Vasant Natya Mahotsav

On the occasion of the ‘World Theatre Day’ , the Academy of Theatre Arts, University of Mumbai , brings for Mumbaikars a bouquet of India’s finest plays, in an 11-day ‘National Vasant Natya Mahotsav’.

The Mahotsav, to be staged between March 22 and April 1, 2007 at the Kalina Campus of the University of Mumbai , will present plays by renowned directors like Ratan Thiyam, Ramesh Verma and Ranjit Kapoor.

Famous Indian theatre groups like the Chorus Repertoire Company from Manipur, The National School of Drama Repertoire Company and the Mysore Rangayan will be performing in Mumbai after a long time. “This is the speciality of the festival. There will be plays in various Indian languages by some of the prominent directors this country has produced,” says Mr Waman Kendre, Director of the Academy. Along with this, several theatre luminaries like Anupam Kher and Naserrudin Shah too might grace the festival. Professor Waman Kendre himself is a very famous Marathi Theatre artist.

Bali Aur Shambhu

Another awesome play comes to town. aRanya, the group behind famous syage plays such as “Shakkar ke Paanch daane” and “Peele Scooterwala Aadmi”, present their third production “Bali aur Shambhu”.

Synopsis:

Bali aur Shambhu is an expression of two characters and their unique spirit towards life.Bali believes in taking life as it comes where as Shambhu lives in the glories of his past. With their respective ideologies and after a series of intricate collisions, eventually the two become one.
