Warrior Rafa Dethrones King Roger

nadal An epic final which was like a blockbuster movie. And in the end, a deserving winner. That is what the Wimbledon 2008 final proved to be. It was show time again, with the World No. 1 Roger Federer, up against the ever improving Rafael Nadal on Centre Court. If last year’s 5 set thriller between the same two champions was awe-inspiring, the final this time around was breath taking.

It had drama, suspense, excitement, brilliance, perseverance and emotions. Rafa led Roger 2 sets to love, and had taken the fifth set to a tie breaker after a rain delay. It seemed divine intervention as far as Roger was concerned. Rafa had 2 championship points in the 4th set tie break leading 5-2 and serving for the match. Federer incredibly managed to save them both and took the match to a final set decider. With the last set at 2-2 and deuce, rain again came down on Centre Court, and the players took another break. Would this be a divine intervention again for Federer or for Nadal, who got agonizingly close to winning the coveted crown ?

Indian Public (ki) Lagaao, Featuring King Khan.

First it was this and then it was the 2nd match between Kolkotta Knight Riders vs. (what’s that) Hyderabad team, where Bollywood’s so called Badshah was seen pimping for his (feed an entire African nation worth) team. And joining him in this charade, who’s who of the Hindi Film Industry were also seen shaking a leg.

By the way - what’s with the Gandhi Son-in-law aka. Mr. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra? The pace at which he was hopping, I am guessing an item number in SRK’s next home production is definitely on the cards.

Even though I think of Shah Rukh as nothing more than an average actor turned premium marketing whore – I do agree, the man is gifted with Midas’s touch. Kolkotta Knight Riders have won two matches in a row.

However looking at SRK’s history of buying film awards, I wouldn’t be surprised if dal mein kuch kala was here too.

Anyhoo, the man continues to produce crap and we, the desi junta, keep lapping it up.

Cricket is Back!!!

20-20 is here. And thank god some sensible Cricket Presentation is here. The forgetful days of the morose presentation from Set Max of ICC events, the days of Dravid’s and Chappel’s fanatic experiments, and most importantly India loosing are over, for sometime atleast.

Cricket Ki Haar, Football Ki Jeet

Yesterday was the first of Cricket World Cup Semis, and one thing was for sure, there was no excitement whatsoever from my end, really felt like it was boring and all. No-India maybe a reason but dull presentation and fewer crowds also don’t make for a nice viewing as the crowds surely add to the TV watching experience. Also the matches have been somewhat dud this time round.

On the other side was a ManUtd-Milan Champion’s league encounter, though a big-time football fan, I have stayed away from football somehow this year. But Football has caught on with people for sure. I still remember the first Premiership match I saw, a ManUtd-Arsenal encounter in 1999-00 season with ManUtd winning 6-1 (Dwight Yorke scoring the hatrick). That was quite a start and after then I was quite hooked up with the beautiful game. People didn’t discuss football at the time, it was cricket all over and sometimes wondered what profit does ESPNSTAR make in showing such a not so popular game (in Indian context atleast).

Subash Chandra’s Alternate Cricket League

Zee announced yesterday setting up of an alternate Cricket league in India. It’s quite difficult to think what will be the effects of this league on Cricket and TV broadcasting, but the ghost of Kerry Packer Cricket is sure to haunt BCCI and Indian Cricket. Kerry Packer’s World Series back in the 70’s ushered the first innovations in the game. Day and night games, TV Replays, The White Ball and Coloured Clothes everything was Packer’s contribution to the game he didn’t know much about.
