Splitsvilla Or Shamesville?

MS003 I consider myself as a 28 year old with an equally active testosterone and other such related hormonal behaviour as any 18- or 20-year-old. And yet I don’t get the fascination (some) youths have developed for an ongoing reality show called Splitsvilla aired on MTV India.

In a nutshell Splitsvilla consists of 20 women vying for attention of two young men. The folks behind this reality show would like us to believe that the concept of the show is the search for True Love (along with a fetching sum of Rs 5 lakh.) Each week one girl’s fate rests in the hands of the two men, who have the power to vote her out of the show.

Reality Shows today are the “in-thing” and like others, I too immensely enjoy(ed) watching many of them. However I fail to see the point behind a show such as this and that too being heavily promoted by a channel responsible in so many ways for shaping the minds of our youth.

MTV Lycra Awards

It’s that time of year again, when all the Bollywood glitterati put in even extra thought into what they’re wearing – and some of them even get rewarded for it.

null

Tune in to MTV at 5 pm on 1st November 2007, to see, the good, the bad and some, just plain ugly. Also worth the watch are performances by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Trilok Gurtu, Midival Punditz, Salim Suleiman, D J Aqeel and C21.

Rehman : He-Man Of Indian Music Industry

What drew me strongly to write this post, is this someone called Naresh Iyer. What a break for this talented youngster, who got rejected from the last 25 finalists for Channel V Super Singer contest. But that disappointment turned into joy, and of great hope, with A.R Rehman, the co-judge for that competition offering Naresh a chance to sing for his next movie.

Now, this singer, who is ruling the roost in Tamil Films, has made another achievement. And what a feather in his cap, apart from the R.D Burman Filmfare award for emerging singing talent ! He bagged the National Award for the best singer at the 53rd National Film Awards, results of which were announced yesterday. Honestly, I was really surprised that he did win the award, not because he isn’t talented. But for someone so new, to win the award is still a rarity! Unnikrishnan the now famous singer in Tamil movies also bagged the National Award in his first song itself for , “Ennavale” for the Tamil movie Kaadhalan . Guess who the music director was ? A.R Rehman.

Music Reality Shows And Their Success Factors ..

There are currently 3 reality shows running on 3 different channels, all related to music. There is ‘Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2007′ on Zee, also called ‘Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Sangeeth ka Pratham Vishwa Yudh’ with contestants from all over, selected through auditions. It started on the 4th of May. And there is the 3rd edition of Indian Idol on Sony; and finally Star Voice of India that premiered on Star and was Star’s attempt to break into the music land.

I had occasion to read a report about the TRP’s of these 3, and it seemed to confirm what I had from empirical observations, the Sa Re Ga Ma Pa was way ahead, followed by Indian Idol and then Star Voice of India. In my own house, on 2 different channels, the same thing can be seen, with both TV’s (spouse and parents) switched onto Zee, on a break onto the Indian Idol, and then rarely the Star Voice of India.

MTV Goes Bonkers With Youth Icon 2007

It looks like either the folks at MTV are on dope or have totally lost their mind, I mean what else can explain their bizarre nomination list for this year’s Youth Icon Award.

Barring Abhishek Bachchan who is the only living-breathing personality on the list, the rest of the nominees basically include literally anything that has affected the Indian Youth in recent times, like – Orkut, Film Rang De Basanti, Multimedia Cell Phone and to top it all, You.
