Hair-Raising On The Tube

I’m practically de-sensitized to the trash overload from the television set. After all..

Got thirteen channels of shit on the TV to choose from…

But every now and then there comes along something that makes me sit up and take notice.

It would have been a normal, frenzied rush-hour day just like another. And a TV schedule of saans-bahu soaps jostling with fudge-eality shows, squeezed in between commercials for insurance policies, shampoos and perfume-smelling detergents. And then it happened.

60% of women call in sick from work on a bad hair day!

…the colourful screen proudly proclaimed to me. Followed by a flood of digi-enhanced, branded-director-signature-style glossy images before you could say SEXIST!!

Link Between Bhojpuri Films And Jaspal Bhatti

Even though Bollywood continues to rule the Indian Entertainment market however one cannot ignore the consistently growing, Bhojpuri film industry. Currently Bhojpuri films cater to roughly 200m viewers and are primarily aimed at those who speak the Bhojpuri language and live in states of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.

Besides the participation of well-known Bollywood celebrities in Bhojpuri films, another reason behind its sudden growth - is the arrival of non-filmy investors. Since Hindi films require mega-budgets, superstars and also the chances of complete recovery are bare minimum therefore investing in this alternate film industry looks to be a viable option. Also many (new) producers use Bhojpuri films as a stepping stone towards their final goal i.e. Bollywood, in terms of experience, investment and familiarity.

Review : Say Shaava Shaava To Worst Reality Show Of All

shaava

Sameer Nair’s highly ambitious and the most talked about Indian television channel, NDTV Imagine was launched yesterday with much (exaggerated) fanfare. Though I have to admit in spite of hiring almost all well-known faces of the (not-so-small-anymore) desi-television Industry, NDTV Imagine never really grabbed my attention. My logic is quite simple – all Hindi channels cater to similar target audience, therefore a new entrant in actuality cannot afford to be different. All they do is present us with old goods, only in new packaging. And quite frankly, I am very much content with investing my spare time in BBC Entertainment – which is in fact a refreshing break from all the American crap we have been subjected to off-late.

However one of the so-called sensational shows on Imagine that caught my eye (during the publicity phase) and happened to be home on time to catch it on the idiot box was, yet again, a reality show named Say Shaava Shaava.

From the looks of it, Say Shaava Shaava had everything going for it.

My Thoughts on Santoshi’s Halla Bol

hallabol

For someone who has been a keen follower of the Jessica Lal murder trial, right from its revival to the final verdict; a film like Halla Bol is an utter disappointment, something I am sure Sabrina Lal wouldn’t be proud off.

I see it as nothing but a waste - a waste of an opportunity - a powerful storyline which not only dealt with the “all that glitters isn’t gold” reality of the Hindi Film Industry but also jerked us with the inadequacies of the society we live in. Instead we were presented with an immature script, cliched dialogues (at times even ridiculous) and above all an in-competent direction.

And unfortunately the fault here lies with no one but Mr. Raj Kumar Santoshi himself. Seriously what was he thinking!
