The Biggest Loser Can Become Insensitive

In the line of reality programmes that are popping up left, right and center, add a new one. This is a program called ‘The Biggest Loser’ airing on Sahara One on Friday, Saturday and Sunday right after Sahara’s most popular serial ‘Woh Rehne Waali Mehlon ki”. All of the reality shows draw inspiration from the success of the original KBC on Star Plus that not only got very high ratings, but even pulled up other shows on the same channel. The biggest Loser is a copy of an international program that first started in 2004.

So what is the biggest loser all about ? It is about bringing together 2 teams of 16 people in total, and forming the Red team and the Blue team. For star quotient, you have Suneil Shetty as a fading Bollywood celebrity. These teams are under the control of personal trainers who make them follow a regime of diet and exercise in order to weight lose. But not everything is nice and sweet. The teams will be weighed every day, and the team that loses less weight at the end of the week will have to remove 1 player from their team till there are only 3 people left as finalists, and the ultimate winner will get the grand prize.

Review Garv : A Slightly Kludgy Tale

There are a large number of movies that get made on the topic of a policeman against the politician and his seniors, and a lot of them are made with an extreme amount of gore and blood. A lot of these movies strike a chord with audiences because there can be no better image that that of a honest policemen dedicated to his duty, honest to the bone, and able to thwart (or kill) the evil henchmen, politicians, criminals, etc.

Why suddenly get into all this ? A TV channel was showing a Salman Khan movie called Garv, and I am not ashamed to admit that if given a chance, I will watch it umpteen times on TV reruns.

The story is not very different; two honest cops along with their colleagues, determined to fight it out with the underworld and anybody else getting in their path. Evil men are equally determined to have their way, and will move or bring in governments to ensure that their writ runs, and are determined to even threaten physical harm to the family members of the hero in order to quell them.

Taking Reality A Little Too Far

These days we do have too many Reality Shows taking place on our Television Network. Be it singing, dancing, fashion, practically everything under the sun (or the moon, when it comes to desi-television). But what happens when these so-called entertaining shows take an ugly turn or in simple words go a little too far in order to serve their TRP purpose.

We have witnessed such situations earlier too, be it the bitching and ugly gossiping on Bigg Boss, musician Anu Malik’s not so amusing tactics on previous Indian Idol Shows and more recently the rift between His Himmeshness and Asha Bhosla on Sa Re Ga Ma.

But this by far exceeds them all.
