It looks like either the folks at MTV are on dope or have totally lost their mind, I mean what else can explain their bizarre nomination list for this year’s Youth Icon Award.

Barring Abhishek Bachchan who is the only living-breathing personality on the list, the rest of the nominees basically include literally anything that has affected the Indian Youth in recent times, like – Orkut, Film Rang De Basanti, Multimedia Cell Phone and to top it all, You.

Youth Icon 2007 campaign began yesterday with ubercool John Abraham casting the very first vote. Frankly speaking John’s selection as the campaign’s front face comes as no surprise since Pepsi is the main sponsor for the event – so much for equality and fair play.

To make the campaign more appealing to the youth, MTV is heavily counting on the popularity of its VJs. MTV VJs would be supporting one nominee each and rooting for it to win. With Cyrus Sahukar supporting Rang De Basanti, Sophie rooting for Abhishek Bachchan, Nikhil Chinappa promoting Orkut, Anusha Dandekar backing the cause of multi-media cell phones and Ranvijay crusading for ‘You’.

MTV Network would be making use of its each channel including VH1 and Nick to promote this popular event for the next three to four weeks. Further, the four week voting campaign will be extensively promoted on-air, online, on mobile and on ground through Café Coffee Day outlets (who also happen to be one of the associate sponsors).

The number of public votes acquired by each one of the five nominees decides the final Pepsi and MTV ‘Youth Icon’ for each year. Previously, Anil Ambani, Rahul Dravid, Shahrukh Khan and Mahendra Singh Dhoni have been selected the MTV Youth Icons. The voting for Youth Icon 2007 will conclude on 29 June and can be done online by logging onto www.mtvindia.com. Viewers can also SMS ICON to 6882 to vote for their choice or call 5056882 and say Youth Icon.

As an added incentive MTV is giving out a Ford Ikon to one of the lucky voters.
