Review Flightplan : A Good Flight With a Poor Plan

Flightplan, playing now on Star World has a lot going for it. For one, it stars Jodie Foster, highly respected as an actress and deliverer of steady box office hits. She picks her movies selectively these days. Flightplan was her first big screen release in three years! It has a stellar cast: Peter Sarsgaard - fast gaining a reputation as a remarkable young actor, Sean Bean – veteran bad guy of many movies, good and bad and delicate beauty Erika Christensen – who made her name as a drug addled teen in Soderbergh’s hit Traffic.

The premise is also fascinating. Foster plays Kylie Pratt who has just lost her husband. She takes her 6 year old daughter and flies back from Berlin to the US. A little bit into the flight Foster wakes up to find her daughter missing. But when she attempts to locate her, no one can find her. In fact, no one even remembers seeing the girl. A look at the flight log reveals that Pratt boarded the plane alone! Has the recent bereavement driven Foster bonkers? Or is there something more sinister going on?

Flightplan is a thriller with a lot of twists and turns. But the end is huge let down simply because it is so implausible. It’s hard to discuss the end without giving too much away so I’ll refrain from doing it.

You remember how when you do something overly complicated that is actually straightforward to do, someone will usually smile and twist their right hand around their head and grab their left ear? That is exactly what this movie is like. Although you see Foster’s daughter in the early scenes, they are executed so that no one else acknowledges her presence – thus leading you to question if she is indeed real. Some reverse casting is performed to throw you off. The entire movie is a setup for the audience.

You’ll be entertained; I have no doubt about it. But much like a meal with really greasy pizza, your enjoyment will be replaced by regret shortly after the whole thing is over.
