Review Supernatural : I Dare You To Watch It
If like me you totally digged tele-series Charmed, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Smallville, The X Files and the likes – then I am cent percent sure that you would love Warner Brother’s recent creation Supernatural which is currently being aired on AXN India every Wednesday night at 10.00 pm.
To brief you up on the storyline:
Supernatural is basically a story revolving around two brother Dean (Jensen Ackles, the hottie from Days of Our Lives and Smallville) and Sam Winchester (Jared Padalecki, not hot but a real cutie pie, previously seen in horror flick House of Wax) in their early twenties.
Like most siblings they have almost completely different personality traits and views of the world. At a very young age their mother, Mary was killed by a paranormal force sending their father on an obsessive pursuit to hunt down the killer.
John was a tough man, he raised his boys to fight so that they would be prepared should anything similar happen to them. While older brother Dean was happy to follow his father’s orders, on the other hand, Sam refused to accept his family’s dark past and present. He left for college as soon as he turned 18, to start a new, normal life.
However, after 4 years of not seeing each other Dean one day shows up at Sam’s door with news that their father has gone missing. But Sam is not interested; he thinks their father is again gone on some blind ghost chase and nothing more. Then something worse happens, Sam’s girlfriend Jessica gets killed by the same supernatural force as his mother, he sets off with his brother to find their dad and the killer.
This journey gives the two brothers enough time to get acquainted once again, whilst dealing with their old sibling rivalries. Together they travel from California back roads, through Colorado wilderness and on to isolated Wisconsin lakes defying creatures that are only suppose to exist in one’s imagination and not reality.
What works for me and what does not:
Now some may accuse the show of being an imitation of super-hit series Charmed and Buffy, I would put the word “inspired†instead. Unlike the Charmed sister or Buffy, the brothers are not magical themselves and are more paranormal investigators. The leading men not only look good on the screen but also manage to do an impressive acting job. The chemistry between them and the physics of their relationship is also very well defined and portrayed. Being brothers, they find it much harder to communicate open heartedly. They have no trouble putting themselves at risk for each other, but talking about feelings? No way.
Supernatural excels in special effects department, which according to me is a big deal in anything concerning the “unknownâ€. They are a mix of both traditional gory stage make-up and the new flashy Star Wars stuff – rest assured you won’t be subjected to Ramsay Brothers type horror stints that we usually get to see via desi-horror programs.
However I have noticed that the endings in a couple of episodes have been a bit predictable, but then again I am seasoned pro in these matters so can’t really blame the scriptwriters. Can I?
As a word of advise, I would say don’t take the show too seriously and literally or else you would be digging your own grave. A certain suspension of belief and an open mind are an absolute must with all these types of shows!
